The Series 1 is where Land Rover got started. From there Land Rover has expanded and created the incredible vehicle line-up we at Land Rover Frisco are privileged to share. In recent years, Land Rover has been working to revitalize their rich heritage and restore original Land Rovers. In 2015, this particular Land Rover Series 1 came to Land Rover’s facility in Solihull and Land Rover Reborn emerged.
Michael Bishop from Land Rover Classic and Adam Bewley, a presenter, rode along together as this Series 1 went through a test drive.
“Series 1 is a term that was given to the vehicle in 1958 when the Series 2 came out,” Michael Bishop said. “All the vehicles previous to that Series 2 model became the Series 1, and you had a mix of products.”
“When it arrived it was actually a multitude of colors. It was originally bronze green,” Bishop said. “She spent all her life in the Outback. It was assembled in Australia originally, in 1950 on this massive estate, 25,000 hectares, so she was a little bit sunburn, a little bit beaten, a little bit worn out, but she came back to Solihull and went through the process of being restored.”
Bishop spoke about benefitting from Land Rover’s archives and engineering drawings from the original Land Rovers as they worked to restore this Series 1, “We can look at the vehicle, access what needs to be done to it, and decide whether that part needs to be restored or replaced. That’s the same with all of the Reborn vehicles.”
The Series 1 weighs 1,200 kilograms and has a 1.6 liter petrol engine with 55 horsepower. Since the vehicle is so lightweight, the engine puts out plenty of power to get it around.
“The seats are green vinyl, and that’s exactly what the specification was in the day. We kept the original key which is a replacement key from Newman’s Hardware in Townsville in Queensland, so it’s a little bit of authenticity there.”
