Jaguar Land Rover and Ford Run “Talking” Car Trial

Self-driving cars a thing of the future? It could happen sooner than you think! Jaguar Land Rover and Ford are currently embarking on the first trials of this kind, and the United Kingdom wants to have self-driving vehicles by the end of 2020.

Jaguar Land Rover and Ford are testing cars that “talk” to one another. The hope is that by communicating with each other, cars will be able to eliminate accidents and cut down drive times by automatically putting you on the most efficient route.

Over the next four years, Jaguar Land Rover plans to manufacture more than 100 vehicles to be used as research to, hopefully, further the technology needed for self-driving vehicles.

Vehicles that speak to each other and connect with different types of technology will be able to adjust their speeds to miss fewer traffic lights, and will know if another vehicle suddenly hits its breaks.

They will be able to let other cars know their breaking status, steering-wheel position, speed, which lane they are in, and other data. In short, vehicles will be so in tune with every vehicle around them that you will not have to worry about accidents.

A lot of vehicles already have different kinds of technology that can detect their surroundings, but it is limited. It often cannot see past a few car lengths away. The technology being tested by Jaguar Land Rover and Ford is still imperfect and will need more time and energy focused on it to create vehicles that can safely transport their inhabitants.

However, this trial is just the start of a new era of vehicle we hope to see on the roads very soon. Self-driving cars may seem to be a little futuristic, but if something can be created to lower or eliminate the amount of vehicle accidents every year, it is probably worth our attention.

New Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations Paint Facility

Land Rover has built a brand new Special Vehicle Operations paint facility that will deliver cars with almost limitless paint options. Customers will be able to select any color and any finish.

The vehicle starts in the top notch body shop where it is cleaned thoroughly to pave the way for a perfect paint application. Once the vehicle is cleaned, it is hand sprayed by a master painter to guarantee optimum coverage. Then two cutting edge robots apply a perfect finish across the entire vehicle. This is done with absolute precision, measured down to the last micron.

The vehicle is then dried in the over and then cooled to the correct temperature to make sure the protective top coat will adhere perfectly. Once the clear protective top coat has been applied it is cured in the main oven. Finally, the vehicle enters the audit facility where it is thoroughly checked for an outstanding paint finish and uniformity.

Land Rover is always striving to offer more advanced paint technologies. This is implemented in many ways, including duo tone finishes and ChromaFlair.

Duo tone adds to the individuality and customization of the vehicle. Customers can choose complementing colors to really refine and personalize.

The ChromaFlair finish adds to the customers’ personal tastes. This finish includes pigments that exhibit a wide range of hue. This gives vibrant colors a color change when you look at it from different angles and in different levels of light.

This facility was built based on the principals of technology, craft, and environment. By using state of the art equipment, expert technicians, and a sustainable environment, vehicles are treated with the utmost care and detail.

By using the Special Vehicle Operations Premium Paint Palette, customers are offered greater individuality and appearance. The SVO state of the art paint facility has almost infinite ability to match any color. Their state of the art mixing technology allows customers to request any hue. They are only limited by their imagination.

LEGO World Record & All-New Discovery

Land Rover helped break a Guinness World Record by using a 22 foot LEGO replica of London’s Tower Bridge to assist in revealing the All-New Land Rover Discovery. The model, built by a team of master LEGO builders, was made using over 5,805,846 individual LEGO bricks, beating the previous record holder by just over 470,000 bricks. This gives the Tower Bridge model the title for Largest Lego Structure (most bricks). It was built over 150 days and even features a working drawbridge.

The reveal of the All-New Land Rover Discovery also featured two LEGO “Discovery Zones.” An Adventure Sone, which featured international explorer Bear Grylls, and an Equestrian Zone, which featured British rider Zara Phillips. The All-New Discovery, driven by Ben Ainslie, moved across the model followed by a life-size replica of the Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing Boat.

The All-New Land Rover Discovery is the most versatile Land Rover model yet. It comes with Land Rover’s new Intelligent Seat Fold technology which allows owners to configure the seven seats in their Discovery from anywhere in the world with their smart phone and plenty of storage.

Partnered with Meridian, a leader in high-performance audio technologies and digital sound processing, Land Rover has created 10 and 16 speaker advanced audio systems for the All-New Discovery. Both options feature Dynamic Volume Control technology to make sure all undesired noise is balanced out. Another technology perk of the All-New Discovery is the Optimal Rear Seat Entertainment system. This system provides 8 inch screens that are built into each front seat headrest. Mobile Hi-Definition Link and USB connections, WhiteFire digital wireless headphones, and HDMI are included.

The exterior of the All-New Discovery is truly designed for the next generation. The All-New Discovery demonstrates well-crafted and sculpted surfaces to showcase a new level of refinement. The interior was designed using inspiration from the classic Discovery. It uses strong horizontal and vertical lines. The interior also boasts a panoramic roof. This one-of-a-kind roof makes the cabin of the vehicle feel larger and provides plenty of natural light.

Grylls Tests Intelligent Seat Fold Technology

Bear Grylls and six members of the British Royal Navy Parachute Display Team tested Land Rover’s new Intelligent Seat Fold Technology by freefalling from 13,000 feet at 125 mph while configuring the seven seats of an All-New Land Rover Discovery via a smartphone.

In just 14 seconds, this brand new technology will allow the owner to remotely adjust the seats from anywhere in the world with the use of a smartphone. This eliminates the need for the owner to manually configure them, saving them time and effort.

Land Rover’s Intelligent Seat Fold technology will allow the owner to completely recline or fold down all five seats in the rear of the Discovery, in addition to adjusting the two seats up front. This new feature will allow owners to configure the seats in their vehicle while doing everyday things; such as waiting in line at the grocery store, or enjoying a child’s sporting event.

“I think the heart of Land Rover is all about pioneering adventure,” Grylls says, “you know having that spirit of discovery and going for things.”

“I think it’s all about doing stuff that is user friendly. The thing is the way to test user friendly is to do it in difficult environments. So that way we say, let’s try to configure a car in freefall. That, for us, is definitely sort of in the right space because you’ve got to be able to concentrate on the important stuff, which is pulling the parachute. This [Intelligent Seat Fold technology] needs to be easy to be intuitive and easy to do. If it’s complicated, then you’re in trouble.”

“The successful part is we did manage to configure this,” Grylls concludes. “The seats did flip down, we opened it up, done, ready to go, ditch the parachutes, in and out of there. So, mission complete.”
