Winter is almost upon us and while safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to winter driving that are a good idea to check into before you are knee deep in the season. To be sure you don’t end up a road popsicle or end up with your holiday budget on ice thanks to unexpected repairs, have your Land Rover or Range Rover looked at by our expert mechanics here at Land Rover Frisco in Frisco, Texas, so that you won’t be left out in the freezing cold this season.
Your antifreeze is an essential part of your car’s winter protection. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is close to 50/50. Many auto service stations and repair centers will check this mixture for free, or you can buy a tester for around $5.
The last line of defense between you and a guard rail or tree are your tires. With treacherous and icy road conditions, you want to make sure you have good tread to ensure proper traction so you don’t go sliding all over the roads. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board says you need at least 2/32″ of depth to be safe. Also be sure to check your tire pressure. Cold weather can drastically lower the pressure in your tires so be sure to check the pressure regularly and pump them up when needed.
Check the condition of wiper blades and consider upgrading to winter/snow blades. Always “park” your blades before turning off the vehicle to minimize chances of sticking to the glass. Better yet, lift blades off the glass overnight. Scrape ice and snow from the roof in addition to every window, mirror and light. Never splash hot water on glass to melt ice as it can crack. Lube door locks and latches and coat weather stripping with silicone spray to help keep doors from freezing shut.
