Discovery Shows Off Towing Capability

To announce the arrival of the 2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE Td6, Land Rover took the new Discovery to the Australian Outback and had it attempt to tow an impressive amount.

First, the Land Rover Discovery HSE Td6 towed a seven-trailer semi-truck almost 10 miles. Finally, the Land Rover Discovery towed a 328-ft road train. The Land Rover Discovery HSE Td6 “has a maximum permissible towing capacity of 7,716 lbs on public roads. However, it was able to tow a 121 ton road train 9.9 miles. This was possible by the Discovery HSE Td6’s four-wheel-drive traction, 254hp 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine, and 443-lb ft of torque.

Towing extreme capacities is a tradition of Land Rover’s when it comes to launching a new Discovery model. The original Discovery pulled a train in 1989, and last year the Discovery Sport premium compact SUV towed rail carriages above the Rhine river.

“Towing capability has always been an important part of Discovery DNA and the raw weight of the road train tells only half the story here,” Quentin Spottiswoode, Land Rover Product Engineer, said. “Pulling a rig and seven trailers, with the rolling resistance of so many axles to overcome, is a huge achievement. We expected the vehicle to do well, but it passed this test with flying colors, hitting 27 mph along its 10-miles route.”

Discovery HSE Td6 buyers will be able to opt for the Advanced Tow Assist technology. This technology helps with reversing “by providing responsive trajectory lines on the rear camera feed to the central touchscreen.” Other towing capabilities include Rear Height Assist, Hitch Assist, and Trailer Stability Assist.
