Used Range Rovers Making a Comeback

If you are a fan of the Land Rover Defender, you are probably aware of the massive increase in value of the used models due to the fact that it is not longer in production. The classic Range Rover and Defender models are starting to get much more appreciation from automotive enthusiasts.

The evidence comes in the form of an increase in restoration projects for Land Rover as well as independent body and mechanic shops. Land Rover recently unveiled one of their restored classics that had been sitting in an abandoned field near their production facility for years.  Many owners have been sending old classics to sort out faults and make improvements to increase the value of their Range Rover vehicles.

An example of this comes from another pet project for Land Rover that involves the restoration of a 1994 Range Rover. They literally replaced or refinished every single part to make it nearly identical to when it came off the production line decades ago.

A whopping 7,400 parts had to be disassembled before the vehicle could even begin restoration.

The only change from the original production model was a significant engine upgrade to a 5.0 liter V8 engine that reduces the 0 to 60 mph by almost half and doubles the amount of horsepower. The engine replacement was based on what is currently in the Land Rover vehicles, allowing the vehicle to preserve its traditional styling but with enhanced speed.

It wouldn’t make sense to install a standard crate engine in the old Range Rover just for it to be more affordable as the brand is known for setting the highest standards.

The popularity of used SUVs has been booming since 2015 and previously unloved classics are starting to get the attention they deserve. Believe it or not, some of the rare classics and used vehicles are selling for the price of a brand new Land Rover simply due to the huge uptake in value.

Evoque Convertible Raising the Bar

The Evoque convertible stands out from the crowd with its unique body style and impeccable performance. Raising the bar for convertible crossover vehicles, it draws eyes as a spectacle of the future of luxury vehicles.

The BMW E9 and Porsche 365 may compete for the attention of consumers but when it comes to street appeal, the Evoque is the clear winner.

When you think of convertibles, you can envision being cramped up in the back seat with no room to move your legs. Not with the Evoque. No need to be a contortionist to fit into this retractable-roof vehicle as it leaves plenty of space for comfort.

With generous leg-room and cushioned armrests, what’s not to love about riding in the Evoque? Chances are you will probably be eager to hop behind the wheel and experience the 240 horsepower turbocharged engine.

If you need to carry along luggage or groceries, simply pop the hatch near the spoiler and there is almost 9 cubic feet of cargo area. The space available in the Mini Cooper and Volkswagen Beetle is a mere portion of what the Evoque is packing.

If you are going for a weekend getaway with your partner, two regular sized luggage bags will fit perfectly in the back. It may not be as much space as the full-size Range Rovers, but it is great for small families to enjoy convertible driving without sacrificing on cargo space.

You can expect a smooth ride over spots that other convertibles would struggle. The Evoque has added metal bracing to keep it from shifting around while in motion.

The Evoque convertible weighs a few hundred pounds more than the Coupe version, which can be contributed to the extra metal and the drop top. The weight certainly doesn’t have any impact on the torque behind this nine-speed automatic.

Push the pedal and embrace the kick behind the Evoque as it scampers forward. Just imagine having the top down, cruising through the city with all eyes on your new convertible!

Businessman Converts Classic Defender

Since the pre-production times, Land Rover has transformed the Defender model from a traditional farming truck to an iconic all-terrain vehicle. When production of the Defender halted in January of 2016, it was a day of mourning for fans across the world.

To celebrate Jaguar Land Rover’s 70th anniversary this year, the Classic division of the company will be restoring a 1948 pre-production Land Rover that recently surfaced near the historic JLR facility in Solihull.

Businessman Frank Rothwell purchased the rare vehicle for only $5,650 from a company that had owned the property where it was sitting for decades. They even nicknamed the pre-production Land Rover “Mildred” because of the amount of mildew built up on the inside.

Rothwell spent over $34,000 and 400 hours of work for a project to convert the Land Rover to run off of coal.

Why put all of this work into changing the vehicle to be powered from the filthiest type of fuel?

Rothwell will be using the vehicle to entertain his grandchildren and to drive his extremely short commute to the office.

The recessed grille of the Land Rover now incorporates a mock boiler equipped with a fully-functional chimney for the fossil fuel smoke. The coal fire heats up water which is converted to steam. The steam engine is what gets the wheels of the vehicle moving forward.

When it is full of steam, the restored vehicle can travel up to 15 miles per hour for a leisurely ride. It still keeps up to par with the early Land Rover models who could barely go above 40 mph. The vehicle is intended for a more recreational purpose and Rothwell is excited to share the fun with his family.

“I think children of this generation need to do things like using coal and lighting fires” he said, “because it will help them learn how the times have changed”.
