The Untamed Winds of South America

All of us at Land Rover Frisco are extremely thrilled to share with you the adventure of a lifetime with “In South America: Untamed Winds,” a one-of-a-kind project sponsored by the Austin-based travel agency Latin America for Less!

Most of us experience what South America has to offer by hopping on a plane, being escorted from city-to-city and perusing the popular sites.    We fly to Buenos Aires, Lima, or São Paulo and visit spectacular and infamous wonders such as Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, and the Galapagos Islands.   But sometimes there are those of “adventurers” out there who decide to do things a tad differently.

Longtime friends, renowned filmmakers and daring thrill-seekers Vincent Urban, Clemens Krüger and Stefan Templer decided to set out on an epic four-month road trip across South America in a classic Land Rover Defender.   Along the way, they captured hundreds of hours of footage documenting their journey through the arid Bolivian highlands, all the way down to the wind-swept landscapes of Patagonia in Argentina and Chile.

This highly spiritual and physically demanding expedition tested their limits as well as the limits of their Defender as they traversed some of the most challenging environments South America has to offer.  The Defender performed with outstanding handling and proved that it could handle any and all types of terrain including winding muddy paths, rocky cliffs, dusty roads, chaotic city streets, serene beaches and the world’s longest mountain range, the Andes.  In short, the rugged and highly capable Defender exuded raw and robust energy by powering itself through the vast and varied countryside.

The exhilarating and impressive video below will grant you visual access to the grandeur of South America’s diverse landscapes, and viewers will be able to feel the rush of adrenaline along with vicarious joy and excitement.

“I hope a viewer is able to feel the time passing, the huge distances, the loneliness, and even the struggles of doing such a trip,” Urban said. “It’s not like Disneyland where you walk from one attraction to another. It’s an adventure.”

“We brought our DSLR cameras and some gear to capture every great moment of this trip.  Lots of winds, emptiness, pampas, bustling cities, animals, deserts and waterfalls – all wrapped up in just under 6 minutes,” elated Urban. “Enjoy the ride!”

We like to think he was referring to his travels as well as his Land Rover Defender!

So sit back, relax and enjoy this eye-popping short film and when you are finished, we encourage you to stop by Land Rover Frisco in Frisco, Texas so that our courteous and dedicated team can help get you on your way to creating your own monumental adventures!

The Defender Celebration Continues…

Land Rover is once again going above and beyond by bringing back a part of history with the building of a genuine replica of the production line that was used to manufacture its first 4×4 in 1948.defender

The Defender Celebration Line re-creates in detail how the first Series I Land Rover was built at the Solihull manufacturing plant just after the Second World War.   Located in Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull factory, the new attraction features replica models in various stages of production, each one precisely built using identical parts and in the exact same way as the original Series I.   The opening of the Celebration Line marks the start of a year of celebration as the Defender enters its final year of production in the UK.

To help lead the project, Land Rover appropriately turned to one of the world’s leading restorers and curator of the famous Dunsfold Collection of historic Land Rovers, Phil Bashall.  Phil built his first Series I Land Rover at the age of 13, but admitted he was shocked when Land Rover told him of plans to build a full replica 1948 production line.

Once Phil had collected all of the parts over a period of months, it took him and his mechanic five weeks to build the five Series I models. His guiding light in the challenge and the man who coordinated the Celebration Line project is Roger Crathorne. Roger, known simply as “Mr. Land Rover”, was born in Solihull and joined Land Rover as an apprentice in 1963. He retired last year having completed more than 50 years of service.defender 2

The new Defender factory tour proudly shows how the bodies are manufactured, and visitors can also see how the engine and gearbox are lowered onto the chassis and watch as the labor intensive process of assembling the painted body panels begins.  The attraction also boasts an area dedicated to telling the story of the creation of the original Series I by Land Rover founder Maurice Wilks using previously unseen video footage provided by his family.
